1999

 

Volpe Center Highlights.  Wrote, edited, and produced the regular newsletter, “Volpe Center Highlights.”  Also provided weekly summaries of Volpe Center activity to the Research and Special Programs Administration (Volpe’s parent administration within U.S. DOT).  (Summer—fall 1999)

 

Spirit of Innovation conference.  Attended the Volpe Center’s “Spirit of Innovation” conference, June 1999; continue to act as an advisor to Center management on innovation issues.  (Summer 1999)

 

National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture and standards.  Supported U.S. DOT’s ITS Joint Program Office in the development of the National ITS Architecture and related standards.  Assisted in standards non-technical outreach activities, prepared documentation, designed presentations on ITS initiatives, attended ITS America in Boston (in 1999 and 2000), and participated in an ITS architecture workshop in Portland, Me. (March 2000).  (Summer 1999—spring 2000)

 

Recruitment.  Attended MIT job fairs, meeting with graduate students and undergraduates in transportation and policy-oriented programs to discuss careers at the Volpe Center.  Continue to assist with recruiting efforts.  (Fall 1999—present)

 

ALERT partnership.  Wrote preliminary material on the National Science and Technology Council’s Advanced Law Enforcement and Response Technology partnership (between the Interior Department and the Justice Department).  (Fall 1999—winter 2000)

 

2000

 

E-commerce analysis.  Conducted statistical analyses of trends in e-commerce, with a particular emphasis on intermodalism.  (Winter—spring 2000)

 

Volpe Center web site redesign.  Served as design director for the Volpe Center’s web site redesign project; oversaw graphic-design contractor, prepared background documentation (including project scope and mission statement), and assisted in project and budget management.  Attended Fedweb 2000 web-design conference in Bethesda, Md. (May 2000).  (Winter—summer 2000)

 

Volpe Center strategic planning and business development.  Consulted with various senior Volpe managers, including the Volpe Center director and the RSPA Administrator, on strategic-planning and business-development issues, including the further development of state- and local-level project work.  (Spring 2000—present)

 

Forest Service marketing work.  Researched and prepared a report on transportation activities, problems and priorities within the U.S. Forest Service for Volpe Center marketing purposes.  (Spring—summer 2000)

 

National ITS Five-Year Program Plan.  Edited and assisted in the production of the Program Plan for the ITS Joint Program Office.  (Spring—fall 2000)

 

FHWA and FTA rulemaking.  Helped to organize and participated in public-outreach workshops on FHWA and FTA rules in planning, ITS, and environment (relating to the National Environmental Policy Act), in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, and San Francisco (summer 2000).  Analyzed public comments received regarding the proposed environmental rule, and prepared recommendations for FHWA and FTA on how to proceed.  (Spring—fall 2000)

 

National Park Service business development.  Worked to attract NPS business to the Volpe Center, building on previous successful relationships and creating purpose-designed marketing materials (especially a web site).  (Fall 2000—winter 2001)

 

Boston Harbor Islands ferry cost analysis.  For the National Park Service (as well as for the other agencies that form the Boston Harbor Islands management partnership), constructed a cost model as a planning tool for ferry service expansion.  (Fall 2000—winter 2001)

 

Transition-team presentations.  Assisted the Volpe Center director in preparing presentations for the White House and congressional transition teams (following the 2000 elections) on Volpe activities and areas of expertise.  Researched Volpe Center state- and local-level project activities.  (Fall 2000—winter 2001)

 

Coast Guard marketing work.  Assisted a Volpe Center team in preparing to convene an issues forum at the Volpe Center in early 2001 to identify areas of concern to the Coast Guard First District, possibly leading to a Volpe Center-Coast Guard partnership beginning in FY2002.  (Fall 2000—winter 2001)

 

2001

 

Volpe Center marketing study.  Assisted the management and workforce-planning division in analyzing the Volpe Center’s marketing and business-development practices through a series of project case studies.  (Winter—spring 2001)

 

Federal funding of highway operations study.  For the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Operations, researched and co-wrote a set of policy recommendations for federal funding of highway operations.  Researched federal involvement in transportation funding throughout history and compared highway to other modes (rail, aviation, transit).  (Summer 2001)

 

National Park Service ITS strategy.   Developing policy recommendations for an intelligent transportation systems (ITS) strategy for the National Park Service.  Researched and wrote a "state of ITS" background paper and organized the "National Workshop to Develop an Intelligent Transportation Systems Strategy for the National Park Service," Denver, Colo., June 2001.  (Winter 2001—fall 2001)

 

Legislative update.  Followed legislative and related transportation news for the Volpe Center; wrote and distributed a regular newsletter ("Legislative Update").  Followed congressional testimony, debate, and priorities; analyzed federal policy and related developments in Washington to the Volpe Center's work.  (Summer 2001—fall 2001)
